Description
The Historic Shearers Quarters is a unique accommodation located in Mangaweka, New Zealand. It is situated on a working sheep and beef farm in the beautiful Kawhatau Valley, approximately 12 km from SH1. The Quarters were built in 1904 and have been restored to provide a comfortable stay while still retaining their original features. The accommodation has matai floors, tongue & groove and rough sawn rimu walls, original big bath, kitchen table, and coal range (wood supplied).
A new wing has a shower, fully equipped kitchen, electric range, fridge-freezer, microwave, and 4m long rimu table. The quarters are decorated with historic photos, books, and local tourist information.
The Shearers Quarters can accommodate up to four people and offer a cabin with a bed, fold-out couch, and basic cooking facilities. There is also a re-located, scrub-cutters hut that provides added accommodation. A barbeque is available for guests to use. The quarters are the starting point for the Kawhatau Valley Walk, a 2-3 day farm walk taking advantage of beautiful local scenery. Local roads are suitable for cycling, and there is good trout fishing in well-known local rivers.
The farm stay offers free private parking, and normal farm activities will be carried out while guests are staying. The Shearers Quarters are on a working farm, so guests are advised to observe all safety precautions. The accommodation has received excellent reviews from guests, with many praising the unique experience of staying in a historic building on a working farm.
