Tours
The winery offers a conducted tour of New Zealand's first underground rock cellar, located 20 meters below the surface of the 'Maybern' vineyard. The tour provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the traditional method of creating sparkling wines by fermentation in the bottle and hand riddling on wooden A-frames from Champagne. Additionally, visitors can hear about Johanneshof's 30-year history and the sustainable methods of growing and crafting their artisan wines. It is important to note that tours are by booking only and minimum numbers apply.
Wines
Johanneshof Cellars produces all wines on-site, harvested from hand-picked Marlborough fruit. The winery offers a wide selection of wines, including Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Methode Traditionnelle, and botrytised dessert wines, as well as Grape Brandy and Grappa. Johanneshof Cellars Gewurztraminer is considered a “Super Classic New Zealand Wine” by prominent wine writer Michael Cooper, highlighting its consistency of excellence. The winery also offers wine tastings and sales to visitors.
Underground Wine Cave
Johanneshof Cellars has a spectacular underground wine cave complete with candles, mold, and riddling racks. The cave offers an authentic wine-tasting experience and is the first built in New Zealand.
Opening Hours and Location
Johanneshof Cellars is open in summer Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm and in winter, Tuesday to Friday 10 am to 4 pm.
