Description

Nestled within the Trephina Gorge Nature Park lies the stunning John Hayes Rockhole, a natural waterhole that promises a memorable experience to visitors.

The rockhole is located 85 kilometers from Alice Springs, Australia, and is surrounded by picturesque scenery that makes for a perfect day trip from the city.

Reaching John Hayes Rockhole requires a serious 4-wheel drive journey that is best undertaken in a rented 4WD as the roads can get rough. Visitors must drive 80km east on the Ross Highway and then take an unsealed outback road for another 5km. It is important to note that the last 5km leading to Trephina Gorge is only suitable for high clearance 4WD vehicles.

Visitors to John Hayes Rockhole can enjoy a range of outdoor activities, including swimming, birdwatching, and short walks. The rockhole is considered one of the five best waterholes for swimming around Alice Springs, but the water can be very cold, even in summer. Visitors are advised to check if the waterhole has dried up if there hasn't been rain for a while. Experienced walkers can undertake the Trephina Ridgetop Trail that leads to the rockhole, offering sweeping views of the East MacDonnell Ranges. There are also several short walks around Trephina Gorge, boasting wide views and sandy creek beds, and around John Hayes Rockhole, which has steep narrow rock walls.

The cooler months from April to September are the best time to visit John Hayes Rockhole, although the park is open all year round. Travelers who have visited John Hayes Rockhole can also take
