Description
Junction Mine in Broken Hill is a historic mine site that started operations in early 1885, extracting chlorides of silver over many years with varying success.
It is one of the oldest mines in the district and easily accessible from the Menindee Road, which is the road going south off the eastern end of Argent Street, the main street in Broken Hill.
Visitors can explore the Brown's Shaft at the Junction Mine and get a feel for the mining history. They can also see into the North Mine, view excellent signboards, and get some fresh rock samples. Apart from the mine, the city offers an exciting range of activities for visitors to engage in. Broken Hill is a city bursting with culture and sophistication, with cool new cafes, fun bars, interesting community vibes, and an array of great art galleries.
There is a signposted Broken Hill Heritage Trail that takes about two hours and leads visitors along streets named after metals, minerals, and compounds, revealing some of the city's rich history. Some of the highlights along the way include the post office, the Trades Hall, and the Town Hall. For avid golfers, they can pack their golf clubs and play at one of the best desert courses in Australia, the fully-grassed 18-hole championship course at Broken Hill. The course is cut out of a natural waterway and offers a spectacular view.
The best time to visit Broken Hill is from April to October, during the cooler months, when the weather is mild and pleasant. Visitors can get to Broken Hill by flying into the Broken Hill Airport or driving from Sydney, which takes around 13 hours.
