Description

Karangahake Gorge is a natural wonder located in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand's North Island.

The gorge is situated between the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges and is accessible by traveling south from Paeroa or north from Waihi on SH2. Most of the activities are centered around the Karangahake Reserve car park and picnic area. The gorge is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers alike.

The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway is a dual walking and mountain biking track that offers visitors the chance to discover mining relics, travel alongside the Ohinemuri River, and experience the large Karangahake Gorge. The East Coast Main Trunk Railway used to run through the gorge until it was bypassed by the Kaimai Deviation, and the Karangahake Gorge section is now a combined walkway and cycleway, part of the Hauraki Rail Trail. There are several walks and tracks starting at the Karangahake Reserve car park and picnic area, ranging from 30 minutes to over 2 hours. Visitors can hike through old caves, along train tracks, and enjoy the stunning views of the gorge.

The winding Ohinemuri River cuts through between the Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges, forming a narrow, steeply-sided gorge that's followed by SH2. The gorge is a well-visited local tourist attraction, and it's easy to see why. The stunning natural beauty of the gorge is awe-inspiring, and the many activities available make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand's North Island. The trail follows the path of two historic railway lines, running from Thames to Paeroa and Waikino to Te Aroha, while a new path will link Waikino to Waihi.
