Kerr Farm Vineyard - A Boutique Winery in Kumeu Region
Kerr Farm Vineyard is a boutique winery situated in the Kumeu grape growing region, which is a mere 30 minutes drive from downtown Auckland.
The vineyard spreads across 23 acres of sloping land that enjoys a northeast-facing slope, allowing it ample rainfall and lots of sunshine. The winery specializes in producing estate-grown wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinotage, which showcase the unique Kumeu regional influence.
Winemaking at Kerr Farm Vineyard
Jaison Kerr purchased the winery in 1989, and the first wine-making year was in 1995 where production was only about 900 cases. Since then, the production has steadily increased but at a slow pace, reaching an output of 2500 cases per annum. The winery's wine-making style is unique, with a predominance of the varietal fruit characteristics. The Auckland area produces wines with tropical flavors, setting it apart from other regions.
Sustainability
Kerr Farm Vineyard is not entirely organic. However, the winery has incorporated principles of organics and Sustainable Wine New Zealand group guidelines into nurturing the vines. There's immense pride at Kerr Farm Vineyard for being one of the few wineries that grow Sauvignon Blanc in Auckland, producing elegant fruit-driven wines.
Wine Tasting and Scenery
Wine tasting is available for visitors to sample the estate-grown wines and soak in the vineyard's beautifully scenic landscapes. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, Kerr Farm Vineyard has closed wine tasting until further notice. However, guests can still purchase wine bottles through the winery's online sales channels.
When to Visit
The winery operates from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm, and 10 am to 5 pm on weekends. Visitors can check the winery's website for operating hours, especially during public holidays. The climate in the Kumeu region is temperate, making it ideal to visit throughout the year.
How to Get There
Kerr Farm Vineyard is a 30-minute drive from Auckland's city center, making it a convenient travel destination for wine tourists. Visitors can self-drive or use the shuttle service available from Auckland. The shuttle service must be pre-booked.
