Kurilpa Bridge

Kurilpa Bridge is a stunning pedestrian and cycle crossing located in Brisbane, Queensland.

It was completed in September 2009 and is owned and managed by the Queensland Government Department of Public Works. The bridge was built with a budget of AUD 63 million and was designed through a two-year creative partnership between Cox Rayner, Baulderstone, and Arup.

The design of Kurilpa Bridge is sculptural and features a multi-mast, cable-stay structure based on principles of tensegrity. This makes it a world-first in city bridge construction. The bridge's cables and tubes are arranged with a structural rhythm, providing the strength and resilience required for a structure that carries thousands of pedestrians and cyclists. It also boasts a world-first structural design and a clever lighting scheme.

Kurilpa Bridge offers tourists a breathtaking view of the Brisbane River. It has two large viewing and relaxation platforms, two rest areas, and a continuous all-weather canopy, making it a perfect place to relax and unwind. The bridge's LED lighting system can dynamically change color, revealing both architectural and structural features. It is revealed in white light at dusk and displays more playful effects later in the evening.

In terms of sustainability, Kurilpa Bridge is one of the first large-scale solar-powered pedestrian bridges in the world. It features 84 photovoltaic panels that supply between 75% and 100% of the power required for lighting. Surplus electricity is fed into the grid. The use of LED lighting minimizes maintenance and operating costs, making it an energy-efficient infrastructure.
