Description

Lake Catani is a man-made body of water located in Mount Buffalo National Park, Victoria, Australia.

It was completed in 1910 under the supervision and possible design by Carlo Catani, a Victorian Public Works engineer, to provide recreation facilities for the newly opened winter resort. The national park was initially established in 1898 as a temporary 1166-hectare reserve centred around the Eurobin Falls, then expanded to 9240 hectares in 1908, becoming a permanent national park reserve.

Lake Catani was built by constructing a massive concrete arched dam across Eurobin Creek at Haunted Gorge. The contract was let in 1908 for 2,355 pounds. The dam blocked the then-called "Underground River" and flooded Long Plain, as well as an old Aboriginal campsite. The initial purpose of the lake was to provide water for the Grossman sawmill, which was then producing timber for the construction of the Mount Buffalo Chalet.

Lake Catani is a favourite spot for visitors seeking year-round water fun. In the summer months, visitors can go boating, fishing or enjoy swimming in the refreshing waters while in winter, the lake provides an ideal ice-skating destination. A golf course was also opened nearby at Tuckerbox Corner in 1911.

Located near the lake’s shoreline is a popular campground that provides its guests with a scenic view and picturesque surroundings.

Lake Catani is an ideal getaway destination for travellers seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Visitors will be enthralled by the beauty of the surroundings and the range of water activities at their disposal.
