Description

Located in the Great Sandy National Park in Queensland, Australia, Lake McKenzie (or Boorangoora, as it is known to the Aboriginal Butchulla people) is a stunning perched lake.

The lake is located 6.2 km southeast of Kingfisher Resort and is easily accessible.

Lake McKenzie is approximately 1,200 metres long and up to 930 metres wide, with a total area of approximately 150 hectares. The sands around the lake are composed of pure, white silica, and the water in the lake is so pure that it is unsuitable for many species. Visitors can dip their toes in the crystal-clear water and relax on the sandy beach.

Facilities for visitors around the lake include picnic areas and toilets. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing day-out filled with sunbathing, swimming, and picnicking in the beautiful surroundings.

The lake has a rich history, including serving as a training camp during World War II in March 1944. The camp was closed later that year. The lake was also featured in the reality competition series The Amazing Race Australia 2 as the location of the final Roadblock and Finish Line.

Lake McKenzie is a must-visit location for those touring the Great Sandy National Park, offering a unique swimming and sunbathing experience surrounded by natural beauty. The crystal-clear water and the pure, white silica sand beach offer an unforgettable experience for visitors. Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, also visited the lake in October 2018, where he viewed a Welcome to Country ceremony.
