Lake Richmond

Lake Richmond, also known as Naragebup, is a stunning freshwater lake located in Rockingham, Western Australia.

The lake has an area of approximately 40 hectares (99 acres) and is around 1,000 metres x 600 metres (3,300 ft x 2,000 ft) in size, with depths reaching up to 15 metres (49 ft) in the centre. It is situated just a short distance from the coast, having separated from the ocean at Cockburn Sound within the last 4,000 years. The thrombolites, estimated to be about 6 million years old, can be found in the shallow waters within approximately 15 metres (49 ft) of the edges of the lake.

Lake Richmond holds significant cultural and historical importance. Before the 1960s, the lake's salinity level was measured between 2000–3500 mg/L but dropped to 300–400 mg/L after being used as part of an urban drainage scheme. The lake was used as a source of fresh water by the local Indigenous Noongar people and settlers of the Swan River Colony. The 10th Light Horse Regiment also had a camp near the lake during the war years.
