Description
Lake Rotoroa is the largest of the twin lakes in the Nelson Lakes National Park in the northernmost reaches of the Southern Alps in New Zealand's South Island.
The lake is also known as Rotomairewhenua, which means "the lake of peaceful lands" in Maori. The lake is a stunning spot to visit and is definitely worth taking time out to visit on any well-planned New Zealand holiday that includes a visit to the South Island. The lake is accessible by car and tour bus, but the tiny town of Rotoroa on the Gowan River outflow has few accommodations.
