Description

Lake Thetis is a remarkable saline coastal lake located in the Mid West region of Western Australia, known for its stromatolites, algal mats, and fauna.

The stromatolites at Lake Thetis exhibit rare columnar branching. The lake is also home to diverse benthic microbial communities, including algal mats. The lake water is alkaline and nutrient-poor, providing an ideal environment for these communities. The lake contains some small fish, amphipods, and crustaceans adapted to highly saline environments, but it is primarily home to microbial communities. The stromatolite community is currently threatened, which is why an interim recovery plan is being written.

In March 2008, a new entry road, car park, and walkways were constructed at Lake Thetis. A 1.5 km walk trail was also created, allowing visitors to explore the lake's unique features. The rehabilitation of a disused rubbish pit on the northern side of the lake has eliminated threats associated with rubbish disposal. Plan a visit to Lake Thetis to marvel at the stromatolites and benthic microbial communities, enjoy the scenic walkways, and learn about the ecological importance of this saline coastal lake.
