Description
Lake Wabby is a unique freshwater lake located on K'gari Island off the coast of Queensland, Australia.
Unlike other lakes on the island, Lake Wabby stands out with its stunning green color and the presence of several fish species. Thirteen species of fish have been identified in the lake, making it a popular spot for wildlife enthusiasts. Despite the phenomenon of the Hammerstone Sandblow slowly covering the lake, Lake Wabby is expected to remain intact for the next hundred years or so.
Lake Wabby is a window lake and a barrage lake. It is formed when a sandmass separates saltwater from freshwater and when water from natural springs gets blocked by sand. With a maximum depth of 12 meters, Lake Wabby is the deepest lake on the island. The lake holds cultural significance for the Butchulla people, the traditional owners of the land, and is regarded as a cultural site by them.
Visitors to Lake Wabby can explore the lake by following various walking tracks from the car park, providing an amazing hiking experience. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service offers amenities such as toilets, a lookout, and a walk-in camping area. The lookout point offers a mesmerizing view of the surrounding natural beauty, allowing visitors to capture every breathtaking moment at the lake.
