Description
Lake Walyungup is a shallow, saline lake located in the suburbs of Warnbro and Port Kennedy, about 55 kilometers south of Perth.
It is part of the Rockingham Lakes Regional Park and is popular among land sailors. The lake is bounded by Safety Bay Road to the north, Mandurah Road to the east, and the Mandurah railway line to the west. Lake Cooloongup is situated north of Safety Bay Road.
Lake Walyungup was formed around 6,000 to 7,000 years ago when it was connected to the sea. It is situated on a Holocene beach ridge and contains nonmarine microbial structures known as stromatolites or thrombolites. Both Lake Walyungup and Lake Cooloongup are experiencing reduced rainfall and fluctuating depths, with Lake Walyungup being more saline. Lake Walyungup is a closed system, with water discharging through evapotranspiration only. Both lakes have freshwater wetlands on their western edges and a limestone ridge on the eastern edge.
The lakes Cooloongup and Walyungup hold cultural significance for the local indigenous population as the place where the Sea Waugal laid her eggs. Cooloongup means "place of children" in the Nyungar language, suggesting that the northern lake was for children and the southern lake for adults. Respecting the cultural significance of the area is important.
A survey conducted in 2005 found that Lake Walyungup primarily attracts local visitors. Visitors
