Description

Lameroo Beach is a small beach located off the esplanade in central Darwin, Northern Territory of Australia.

It was the location of the town's historic baths between 1922 and 1974. The name, Lameroo Beach, comes from a corrupted interpretation of the nearby Aboriginal site Damoe-Ra, which means "eye" or "spring" in Larrakia.

Lameroo Baths were the second ocean baths built in Darwin replacing the first one near Fort Hill, which was damaged in a cyclone. Lameroo Beach was a popular spot for swimming and hence building the new baths was an obvious choice. The baths were described as a "miniature Manly" as they attracted a lot of visitors. F. Burton. The construction of the baths cost £2,000 which was a lot of money at the time. The Lameroo Baths were the only swimming pool in Darwin during the early to mid 1900s as there were no private swimming pools until 1955. Lameroo Baths hosted many swimming carnivals, organised by the Darwin Amateur Swimming Club. A Darwin resident, who remembered the Lameroo Baths, recalled that it had a cement wall surrounding it topped by palings and had bathing sheds at the end.
