Explored by Thomas Mitchell in 1836, the park features Mount Langi Ghiran, named "Mount Mistake" by Mitchell. Two reservoirs constructed in the 1880s still serve as water supply for Ararat. A timber processing mill was built in 1940 but has since been dismantled.
