Description

Langley Park is a rectangular, grassy open space located in the heart of Perth's central business district.

It spans 900 x 100m or 3000 x 300ft and was developed between 1921 and 1935 by reclaiming land from the Swan River. Initially created as a green space, Langley Park has served a variety of purposes throughout its history.

In the 1920s, Langley Park was used as an airstrip by Major Norman Brearley, who pioneered civil aviation in Western Australia. Today, the park continues to welcome small aircraft for fly-ins, and it has even been the site of emergency landings. This historical significance has cemented Langley Park as a valuable asset close to the central business district.

In addition to its historical significance, Langley Park is utilized for various events in the present day. It was a popular location to view the annual City of Perth Skyworks fireworks on Australia Day until 2022. Although the event has ended, a smaller fireworks display and drone show will be held for the 2023 celebrations. The park has also hosted the Telstra Rally Australia World Rally Championship and the final stage of the Red Bull Air Race World Series. Langley Park has served as a performance space for Cirque du Soleil during their tours, and it was even used by the West Coast Eagles to celebrate their AFL Grand Final win in 2018.

With its central location and ample size, Langley Park has proven to be a versatile and essential asset for the city of Perth. Its evolution from a green space to an airstrip to a versatile event site showcases its adaptability and importance in the community.
