Description
The Leg of Mutton Lake is located in the south-east of South Australia between Valley Lake and Blue Lake.
It is one of the four lakes that were formed when a young Australian volcano erupted around 4,000 years ago. The lake gets its name from its shape, which resembles a piece of meat.
Although Leg of Mutton Lake has become dry due to the reductions in the water table, the natural beauty of the area makes it an excellent location for hikes and scenic walks. Visitors can choose from the Mountain Trail, Pepperport Trail, and Blue Lake Circuit. These walks take visitors through the famous craters of Mount Gambier, and along the way, you can stop and take photos at the many lookout points.
The Valley Crater Lake is the most popular of these lakes and shouldn't be missed. Here, visitors can find many facilities suitable for families, such as a children's playground, outdoor barbecues, shelters, picnic amenities, and a wildlife park. The Leg of Mutton Lake is also great for birding, hiking, and walking.
The Leg of Mutton Lake is open year-round, and the area is beautiful to visit anytime. Spring is an especially lovely time to visit, with its flowers blooming and yellow-tailed cockatoos and wrens in abundance.
The Leg of Mutton Lake is situated in South Australia's Mount Gambier and is easily accessible by car. The Lake lies between Valley Lake and Blue Lake, and visitors can park at the Bly Lake parking area just off Bay Road.
The Leg of Mutton Lake formed naturally from a vent where lava flowed following an eruption in Australia's south-east around 4,000 years ago. The founding of the nursery was established at the Northern End
