Legislative Council Chamber

The refurbishment of the Legislative Council Chamber focuses on, functionality and heritage to achieve flexibility in line with modern technology while increasing seating capacity.

The Legislative Council Chamber refurbishment project provides a new seating design and layout to accommodate additional LCC Members for Parliament. The custom designed furniture has been made to a high quality to improve functionality and suit current technologies whilst still being sympathetic to the heritage of the Chamber and building. The Chamber’s horseshoe layout is maintained and the Member seating capacity is increased from 30 to 40 including 4 spare seats for future expansion. Mobile ergonomic chairs replace the previously fixed seating, specially designed and developed via a number of prototypes.

The scope of works also includes new carpet design, provision for wheelchair access, restoration of significant heritage furniture, upgraded lighting, air conditioning and communications technology to the Chamber, President’s and Public Galleries. The Public Gallery design has been modified to increase its seating capacity for special Parliamentary events. To achieve this, the mechanical ductwork has been relocated and built into the new bench seating.

Winner of the 2011 Margaret Pitt Morrison award for Heritage in the WA Chapter of Australian Institute of Architects awards, this project is an excellent example of the skills and experience at Oldfield Knott Architects.
