Located on Alpine Way, about 16 km south of Khancoban, Major Clews Hut walking track is a fantastic day walk for visitors looking for diverse landscapes and stunning views.
This eight-kilometre walking track takes you through different types of forests and gullies, offering a unique perspective of the region.
As you start your trek on Major Clews Hut Walking Track, prepare to be captivated by the natural beauty. The trail passes through alpine ash trees, wattle blooming in yellow flashes, and montane forests balancing atop craggy ridgelines. As you continue, you'll explore narrow gullies and enjoy the amazing views of the surrounding pristine landscapes. You'll also have the opportunity to see Major Clews Hut, a historic alpine hut built in the late 1950s for the eponymous Major, a surveyor for the Snowy Mountain Scheme.
You can enjoy Major Clews Hut Walking Track all year round, but the best time to visit is from October to April when the weather is milder. During these months, the plants and trees in the region are in bloom, making the hike more picturesque.
If you're planning to explore Major Clews Hut Walking Track, it's recommended that you wear comfortable walking shoes and bring enough drinking water. As mentioned earlier, the trail begins on Alpine Way, about 16 km south of Khancoban. If you're travelling by car, you can connect with Geehi Walls track for around 27 kilometres, which loops back to meet Alpine Way, 12 kilometres south of your start point.
