Description
Welcome to Mammoth Cave, a stunning limestone cave located 21 km (13 mi) south of Margaret River, in the beautiful Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, about 300 km (190 mi) south of Perth.
The cave is surrounded by karri and marri forest, providing a beautiful natural setting to explore this cave.
The cave has a length of 500 m (1,600 ft) and a depth of 30 m (98 ft). The cave has been known to European settlers from around 1850s, but was not explored until 1895 by its first explorer, Tim Connelly, who was appointed caretaker of the cave. Between 1895 and 1904, Tim conducted tours using lamp light. In 1904, electric lighting was installed to illuminate the cave, making it accessible for visitors.
Mammoth Cave offers visitors the chance to see fossils of Pleistocene fauna which are over 35,000 years old! Fossils found in the cave include thylacines and the giant marsupial herbivore Zygomaturus, which has been extinct for thousands of years. The cave has been studied for over a century, and the fossils found here have provided invaluable insights into the fauna of Western Australia's past.
Exploring Mammoth Cave is an incredible experience with breathtaking stalagmites and stalactites, stunning chambers and an unforgettable, awe-inspiring underground experience.
