Mangungu Mission

Mangungu Mission is a historic site located near Horeke, in the Hokianga Harbour of New Zealand.

It was the second mission station established in New Zealand by the Wesleyan Missionary Society. The mission was founded in 1828 by the missionaries John Hobbs and James Stack after the first WMS mission station in the country had been sacked the previous year.

The Mangungu Mission House, built in 1828, is the centerpiece of the site and is the largest surviving pre-Treaty building in New Zealand. The mission house is a beautiful example of early colonial architecture and is open to visitors. Visitors can learn about the history of the mission and the role it played in the early settlement of New Zealand. The house is furnished with period pieces and provides a glimpse into what life was like for the early missionaries who lived there.

Mangungu Mission played an important role in the history of New Zealand. It was the site of the largest signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, which is considered the founding document of New Zealand. The mission was also an important center of trade and commerce in the early days of European settlement. Shipyards, timber merchants, and a mission station all jostled for position in the top end of the Hokianga Harbour.
