The Maribyrnong River is a scenic river located in the northwestern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria.
It covers a distance of 40 kilometers and has a descent of 42 meters. The river is formed by the confluence of the Jackson and Deep Creek, and it flows southward towards its confluence with the Yarra River at Yarraville.
The Maribyrnong River valley is home to many geographic features and tributaries, including Yarraville Wharves, Maribyrnong Berth, Newells Paddock Wetlands, Burndap Lakes, Jacks Canal, Frogs Hollow Wetland, Cliffs, Steele or Rose Creek, Grimes Flat, Kulin Wetlands, Taylors Creek, Horseshoe Bend, Gumms Corner, Arundel Creek, Jackson Creek, and Deep Creek.
Originally named Saltwater River, the river was renamed Maribyrnong, which is thought to have originated from the Woiwurrung language of the local Wurundjeri people. The river has given its name to the City of Maribyrnong and the suburb of Maribyrnong.
The Maribyrnong River valley has been inhabited by the Wurundjeri people for thousands of years. The first Europeans to explore the river were led by Charles Grimes in 1803. In the 19th century, the river became home to many industries, leading to contamination.
