Matavino Wines - Taste Outstanding Boutique Wines
Matavino Wines is a small family-owned and operated vineyard in the famous Matakana Wine region, which is about an hour's drive north of Auckland, New Zealand.
The vineyard owner, Jim Hight, established Matavino with a vision of growing a range of wines to match the local food and produce. The vineyard epitomizes the diversity of the Matakana Wine Region by growing ancient Italian red grape varieties and French white varieties of Viognier and Chardonnay.
The Vineyard
The vineyard was first planted in September 2006, and the first wines were sold in October 2010. The vines at Matavino are hand-nurtured using sustainable practices. The vineyard grows Italian grape varieties such as Dolcetto, Barbera, and Nebbiolo, as well as French white varieties of Viognier and Chardonnay. The wines come from the Barbera and Nebbiolo which are fermented in traditional Italian Amphora clay vessels.
The Cellar Door
Matavino Wines offers a unique experience at its Cellar Door, located within the winery. Visitors can see the winemaking process up close, including the Amphora. The Cellar Door is open from 12 noon until 5 pm, Saturdays and Sundays from Labour Weekend (end of October) until Easter. At other times, by appointment, for groups of four or more. Tasting the boutique wines at Matavino is an experience that visitors should not miss.
Matching Wine and Food
Matavino wines are best matched with food, but they also taste great out on the deck or around a BBQ with friends and family. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings while being surrounded by the beautiful views of the vineyard.
