Description

Merrimu Reservoir, located just west of Melbourne, offers a serene and quiet recreational area for visitors.

It serves as a vital supplier of drinking water to local towns and an irrigation source for the Werribee Irrigation District. The reservoir was constructed in three stages from 1969 to 1986 and has a storage capacity of approximately 32,000ML. The Merrimu recreational area is open daily from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Visitors can enjoy picnicking by the water's edge, taking in the natural scenery, and relaxing in the tranquil atmosphere. Various picnic facilities are available, but camping, overnight stays, and reserving picnic areas are prohibited. Activities such as abseiling, paraflying, shooting, and archery are not permitted. Motorbikes and horses are also not allowed in fenced areas, ensuring a peaceful environment. Visitors are only allowed in the designated recreational area and prohibited from entering the surrounding land.

The Merrimu recreational area is accessible year-round, making it a great destination for a day out with family or friends. To get to Merrimu Reservoir, it is approximately 33km from Melbourne. Visitors can take highway M8, continue straight at the roundabout onto Gisborne Road, turn right onto High Street, left onto Grant Street, and continue onto Merrimu Reservoir Road. Signs to the reservoir will be visible from the intersection of Grant Street and High Street.
