Description
Located inland from the Great Ocean Road bridge over Moggs Creek, Moggs Creek Picnic Area Aireys Inlet is a perfect stopover for nature enthusiasts and picnickers.
To reach the site, take the Moggs Creek turn inland from the Great Ocean Road, then turn left into Old Neuk Road, follow the road until it bends to the right, then turn left into Boyd Avenue and follow the unmade road to the picnic area.
The picnic area has three walking tracks that lead off, the primary being the Nature Walk (1.8 km circuit). The Nature Walk is a short stroll rich in birdlife, and it follows Moggs Creek across a number of small wooden bridges.
The second is the Ocean View Track (4.5 km, 1.5 hr circuit), and it's a walk through dry woodland and coastal heathland. The Ocean View Track features fantastic coastal views of the Split Point Lighthouse, the Fairhaven beach, Eastern View beach, and Lorne. On the map, it appears as the green dotted loop south-east of the picnic area.
The final track available at this picnic area is the Track to Distillery Creek Picnic Area (7.5 km one way), a strenuous hike through a firebreak track that goes to Painkalac Dam, then continues through iron barks and other eucalypts, toward the Distillery Creek Picnic Area. On the map, it looks like the green dotted line numbered 5.
Moggs Creek Picnic Area Aireys Inlet is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during autumn and spring when the weather is cooler and the walking tracks are more comfortable to navigate. During winter, visitors are advised
