Description

History: Montague Island, also known as Barunguba to the Yuin people, has a long history of Aboriginal habitation and holds significant cultural importance.

It was first sighted by Europeans in 1770 and later identified as an island.

Description: Montague Island is a protected nature reserve located off the South Coast of New South Wales. Covering an 81-hectare area, it is the second-largest island off the NSW coast. The island is known for its scenic, scientific, and historical values, including the iconic Montague Island Light buildings. The NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service manages the island and offers guided tours for public access.

Wildlife: Montague Island is home to a diverse range of fauna, with 49 species recorded. It is particularly known for its little penguins, as well as its marine life, seabirds, and other wildlife.

Environmental Restoration: The island faces challenges from the infestation of kikuyu grass, a weed that negatively impacts native species. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is actively managing this issue through various methods, including poisoning, burning, replanting, and aerial spraying in less accessible areas.

Climate: Montague Island has a coastal maritime climate, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C in summer and 5°C to 16°C in winter. The island experiences rainfall throughout the year, with winter being the wettest season. Visitors should be prepared for high winds, heavy swells, and sudden weather changes, and are advised to bring hats, sunscreen, and suitable clothing for different conditions.
