Located in the Pilbara, the Montebello Islands are a must-visit destination for divers, snorkelers, and anglers.
With untouched water bodies, these islands boast more than 150 varieties of coral, 450 species of fish, 630 types of mollusks, and 170 species of sea stars, urchins, and other echinoderms. This 58,000-hectare marine paradise is one of the most bio-diverse marine environments in the world and a best-kept secret.
The Montebello Islands offer a variety of activities that cater to different enthusiasts. Diving and snorkeling in the untouched lagoons, channels, barrier reefs, and fringing reefs is a must-do for everyone. The waters surrounding these islands provide habitats for various sea creatures, including dugongs, dolphins, and at least ten species of whales. During the turtle nesting season (October to April), the beaches of the Montebello Islands are popular nesting sites for green, hawksbill, and flatback turtles. The unique coastal mangrove forests are a rest stop for many rare migratory wading birds.
Anglers can enjoy fishing in the designated fishing zones for a chance to make a big catch. These waters harbor mangrove jack, emperor fish, coral trout, cod, and even the coveted sailfish.
Tourists can discover the Montebello Islands in full glory by indulging in camping on a select few islands. You can camp for a maximum of five nights, except during the turtle nesting season (October to April). With its white sandy beaches surrounded by pristine waters, camping under the night sky is nothing less than magical.
