Description
Montezuma Falls, originally named Osbourne Falls, is a beautiful horsetail waterfall located in the West Coast Range of Tasmania.
The falls received their current name from the Montezuma Silver Mining Company, which held mining leases in the area. Situated north-east of Zeehan and near the village of Rosebery, the falls can be accessed via the Murchison Highway. Starting at an altitude of 449 meters above sea level, the falls descend between 103-110 meters, making them one of the highest falls in Tasmania. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the falls by taking an 8-kilometer three-hour return walking track from the trackhead at the foot of Mount Read near Williamsford.
Montezuma Falls was a stopover point on the North East Dundas Tram, a 2-foot narrow gauge railway that passed through the mountains and forest in the region. The proximity of the railway line to the falls provided an incredible view for passengers. Today, visitors can follow the same path and enjoy the same view by walking along a track that follows much of the former railway alignment. After the railway ceased operation, the track became popular among visitors who wanted to view the falls.
If you're looking to discover a beautiful horsetail waterfall in Tasmania, Montezuma Falls is a must-visit destination.
