Moreton Island Desert

Tourist attractions

Moreton Island, QLD 4025

Description

Experience a unique adventure on the breathtaking Moreton Island Desert.

As part of this thrilling destination, visitors can go on the Tangalooma Desert Safari Tour or brave The Desert, a spectacular sand blow that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Located within Gheebulum Kunungai (Moreton Island) National Park and Moreton Island Recreation Area, the Moreton Island Desert is jointly managed between the traditional owners and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. The island is around 40km offshore from Brisbane and can be reached by ferry, barge, or boat. Permits to drive or camp in Mulgumpin’s recreation area are booked and managed through Mulgumpin Camping.

The Desert is a popular spot for tobogganing and sand surfing. It is accessible through The Desert track, a scenic 1.1 km return journey that begins from the western side of the island. During your journey, you will climb multiple steps along the top of a giant coastal dune, which will provide you with a thorough workout. The Desert track is accessible all year round as it is open 24 hours a day. Visitors should check park alerts on the latest information on access, closures, and conditions.

The Desert track can be accessed by a high clearance 4WD vehicle or on foot. For driving, four-wheel-drives with high clearance and low range function are strongly recommended. All-wheel-drive vehicles without true 4WD function and vehicles with low clearance will have difficulty in inland tracks and soft sand, therefore we don't recommend them for Mulgumpin
