Description
Mount Morgan No. 7 Dam, also known as Big Dam, is the largest dam located on the Dee River in Mount Morgan, Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia.
It was built by the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company Limited upstream from the Mount Morgan mine in 1900. In 1999, the wall was raised by 4.5 metres. It serves as the primary source of water for Mount Morgan town.
The No. 7 Dam area is a perfect spot for recreation with its playgrounds, barbeques, and picnic facilities. It provides anglers with fishing opportunities for yellow belly, southern saratoga, and redclaw. In 2019, artificial fish habitats were introduced into the waters to support the release of golden perch fingerlings and other species to improve opportunities for recreational fishing.
As of 2021, the dam has been significantly depleted due to drought conditions, which forced the Rockhampton Regional Council to truck water to the Mount Morgan water treatment plant at considerable expense. In November 2022, the council proposed building a potable water pipeline that would connect the Gracemere and Mount Morgan water supply networks as an alternative water supply mechanism.
