Description
My name is Musa Agri I originally come from Sudan/ Nuba Mountains region similar climate to the South West of Western Australia. I was born in a very small village where my father was a cattle farmer.
I started woodcarving at a very young age in the late 1980’s and learnt the skill to use basic carving tools from my uncle. I left my village during the Sudan civil war and headed to the capital city of Khartoum where I attended school. During that time I continued working with different woodcarvers and also trained to use modern woodworking machines. I was taught by several tutors and gained many skills in woodcarving and furniture making.
At the age of 18 I was a fully professional woodcarver. In my early 20’s I travelled back home to my tiny village in the Nuba Mountains for a visit only to find myself in the middle of another war. However, I managed to escape the war zone by walking for weeks.
It has taken me 6 years to finally open my studio in Cowaramup. I only use sustainable timbers and never cut down healthy living trees some of my timber comes from offcuts from timber mills. Most of my products are homewares, gifts, sculptures, jewellery boxes, cooking utensils, condiments bowls, fruit bowls, side tables, coffee tables, and one-off designs.
