Located on the northern boundary of Gunnedah town, the Namoi River flows westward and is a significant component of the major river systems of the Barwon, Darling and Murray. 'Woolshed Reserve' is an area located on the banks of the river and holds great historical significance.

Early settler John Johnson built a wool shed here, hence the name 'Woolshed' before the area was officially named Gunnedah in 1860.
