Description
Notley Fern Gorge Legana is a must-visit state reserve located in Northern Tasmania, just half an hour's drive (24 kilometers/15 miles) northwest of Launceston.
The area is a remnant patch of rainforest above the Tamar Valley, and it offers a serene atmosphere that is perfect for leisurely walks and picnics beneath towering trees.
The Notley Fern Gorge is dominated by eucalypts with towering heights above the rainforest understorey. Visitors can take a 1.5-kilometer (1 mile) walking trail that weaves through the forest, providing an opportunity to view some of the impressive features of the area. The trail takes approximately 45 minutes to walk and requires moderate fitness. The walk consists of several creek crossings with a steady climb uphill upon return.
Visitors can indulge in learning about the rich fauna and flora of the region through the information stands dotted throughout the reserve. The reserve is home to a variety of Australian birds, with pink robins and golden whistlers being among the most commonly sighted ones. A variety of largely nocturnal wildlife are also present, including Bennetts wallabies, Tasmanian devils, and ringtail possums. One can marvel at the views of the large tree ferns, hard water ferns growing down by the creek's edge, and filmy ferns growing on the tree trunks.
Notley Fern Gorge is open throughout the year for visitors to enjoy the serene atmosphere of the forest reserve newline.
