Description
Located just 5 minutes' drive southwest of Sheffield, O'Neill's Creek Picnic Reserve is a picturesque forest reserve that offers an easy 15-minute walk on the O'Neill's Creek Nature Trail.
The trail takes you through a stunning array of vegetation, showcasing a variety of trees and fern glades.
At O'Neill's Creek Picnic Reserve, you will find a wide range of trees and ferns, including White Gum eucalypts, Blackwood trees, Browntop Stringybarks, Myrtle trees, Sassafras trees, Dogwood trees, and fern glades. Additionally, the reserve is home to various wildlife such as iridescent dragonflies, frogs, yabbies, freshwater crayfish, and platypus.
These stumps were used for holding boards that axemen or sawyers would stand on while felling trees. Logging in the area was done with the help of bullock teams or draught horses to skid out the logs.
O'Neill's Creek Picnic Reserve offers a range of facilities for visitors, including parking for short stays, BBQ facilities, and shelter with tables and benches. If you wish to extend your stay, the neighboring Gowrie Park Wilderness Village provides cabins and powered van sites.
The reserve can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to experience its beauty is from late spring to early autumn when the weather is mild and the trees and vegetation are in full bloom. It is recommended to bring insect repellent and wear comfortable shoes or boots for the nature walk.
