Description
Oberon Dam, also known as the Fish River Dam, is a significant water containment structure in the Central Tablelands region of New South Wales, Australia.
It was constructed by the NSW Department of Public Works and completed in two stages, with a recent upgrade in 1996. Located 3 kilometres southeast of Oberon on the Fish River Creek, the dam serves multiple purposes including flood mitigation, industrial use, and water supply. The dam wall stands at 35 metres high with a buttress measuring 232 metres long, and the embankment spans another 167 metres. The impounded reservoir, Lake Oberon, covers an area of 410 hectares and supplies water to various areas including Oberon Shire, Lithgow City Council, Sydney Catchment Authority, and EnergyAustralia power stations.
Lake Oberon offers excellent fishing opportunities throughout the year, with regular stocking of brown and rainbow trouts. The northern shore of the lake provides picnic facilities and toilets, making it an ideal spot for family outings or a relaxing afternoon. The vast expanse of the lake also allows for boating, water skiing, and swimming, making it a great destination for water sports enthusiasts. With a maximum water depth of 30 metres, the concrete ski jump chute and fuse plug spillways can discharge an impressive 280 cubic metres of water per second. Whether you're interested in water sports or simply seeking a peaceful picnic spot with a beautiful view, Lake Oberon offers the perfect setting to unwind and reconnect with nature.
