Description
Located in the thick of the bush outside Mungindi, One Ton Post is a remarkable physical monument erected by surveyor JB Cameron. JB Cameron set out to survey the 199.5 miles east from Barrigun to the Barwon River, following the completion of the survey from Barrigun to Cameron Corner. The One Ton Post was placed on the west bank of the Barwon River near Mungindi to mark the end of the survey of the twenty-ninth parallel (degree of latitude) in October 1881.
The One Ton Post is the original survey peg, whereas at Cameron Corner, they've had to replace theirs with a cement marker.
The One Ton Post is a great spot to visit and experience the local history and the significance of the border survey. Visitors can explore the surrounding terrain of the bush and marvel over the skills of the surveyors who navigated the area over 100 years ago. A trip to the One Ton Post is a perfect way to take in Mungindi's incredible history and explore the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
The One Ton Post is open to visitors year-round.
