Description
Ophir Reserve Orange is a fascinating historic site located 30 kilometres northeast of Orange.
It marks Australia's first Gold Rush and offers a picturesque setting and a glimpse into the nation's colonial past.
Visitors to Ophir Reserve can enjoy a range of activities, including camping, picnicking, and exploring the old diggings. Evidence of old alluvial, reef, and deep lead mines can still be seen in the area. Those interested can also try their luck in Summer Hill Creek by hiring a gold pan from the Orange Visitor Information Centre.
The best time to visit Ophir Reserve is during the warmer months from October to April. It is not advised to camp during the cold and wet winter months.
To get to Ophir Reserve, take the Ophir Road from Orange and follow the signs. The road is unsealed but suitable for 2wd vehicles. Visitors should be cautious around the old open mine shafts.
It is important to note that Ophir Reserve is not a museum and remains much as the diggers left it. Visitors should exercise caution around the old open mine shafts.
