Description

Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave is a stunning geothermal attraction located between Taupo and Rotorua in New Zealand. The park is situated on the banks of the Waikato River (Lake Ohakuri) and is often referred to as "The Place of Adorning".

Lonely Planet Travellers Guide writes: “Orakei Korako is arguably the best thermal area left in New Zealand". The park is open every day of the year from 8am till 4.00pm, and the average sightseeing time is about 1 hour.

Access to Orakei Korako is by boat, and the ferry fare is included in the admission fee. The geothermal field at Orakei Korako is only accessible by boat - a short ferry ride across the lake from the Visitor Centre to the geothermal field. The ferry leaves on request throughout the day. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the geothermal park by following a 1.5-mile (2.5-kilometer) boardwalk.

The park is surrounded by stunning native bush, and visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll around the breathtaking geothermal features. The geothermal features include gushing geysers, hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and some of the largest and most amazing silica terraces in the world. Visitors can also explore the thermal Ruatapu Cave which extends more than 36m down into volcanic tuff to the 'Waiwhakaata' or 'Pool of Mirrors' hot pool at the bottom.

The Hidden Valley of Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park is off the beaten tourist track, and it is at once breath-taking in its beauty, and yet spine-chilling in the might of its unbridled subterranean power. The park is a unique geothermal experience that the whole family can enjoy, including dogs. Children under 6 can enter for free, and the family package costs $118 (2 Adults and 2 or more Children). Visitors can also browse the souvenir shop, pick up a copy of the Orakei Korako book, or enjoy coffee and a bite to eat at the MudCake Café (currently only open weekends with limited hours). The park is a leisurely 45-minute drive south of Rotorua or 25-minute drive north of Taupo.
