Description
The Peacock Fountain is a stunning Edwardian fountain located in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens in Christchurch, New Zealand.
The fountain was purchased by the Christchurch Beautifying Society from money bequeathed by John Thomas Peacock, a trader, politician, and philanthropist. Peacock left a substantial sum of money to the Christchurch Beautifying Association "for the purpose of beautifying the reserves and gardens in the City of Christchurch and improving the Avon River." The idea was promoted by the Christchurch City Council, with the Andersons Ltd supplying details of the prefabricated fountains which were created at the Coalbrookdale Iron Works. The Peacock Fountain was unveiled in 1911 and was moved to a new location some years later. It was put into storage in 1949 and after a $270,000 renovation, it was commissioned again in 1996, in its third location in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
The Peacock Fountain is a much-photographed tourist attraction and is known for its elaborate color scheme. The fountain is decorated with peacocks, which are a symbol of beauty, grace, and pride. The fountain is surrounded by beautiful gardens and is a popular spot for visitors to relax and take in the scenery. The fountain is also a popular spot for wedding photos and other special occasions.
The Peacock Fountain is located in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, which is a 21-hectare park located in the heart of the city. The gardens are home to a wide variety of plants, including native New Zealand plants, exotic plants, and plants from around the world. The gardens are also home to a number of other attractions, including a conservatory, a rose garden, a herb garden, and a water garden. Visitors to the Peacock Fountain can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the gardens, take a picnic, or simply relax and enjoy the scenery. The fountain is easily accessible by public transport, and there is plenty of parking available nearby. The Peacock Fountain is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Christchurch, and it is a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon.
