Peter Faust Dam

Peter Faust Dam, also known as Lake Proserpine, is an impressive engineering feat located 26km inland from Proserpine, North Queensland, Australia.

Constructed by Thiess over the Proserpine River, the dam was completed ahead of schedule in December 1990. It has a capacity of 189,000 megalitres and serves as a crucial water source for the Whitsunday region.

The dam offers a range of recreational activities, including camping, boating, and fishing. Since October 4th, 2019, there has been a 72-hour free camping spot available for visitors. Fishing enthusiasts will find the dam particularly appealing, but they must obtain a Stocked Impoundment Permit to fish there. Various fish species, such as barramundi, sooty grunter, sleepy cod, and mangrove jack, can be caught in the dam.

Peter Faust Dam has a notable history of overflowing. The first overflow occurred in December 2010, with water reaching its highest level in March 2011, surpassing the spillway by 1.48m. Subsequent overflows took place in March 2012 and March 2013. Although the dam experienced its lowest water level in 2007, it has since been restored to optimal levels.
