Description

Nestled in the Tuggeranong district of Canberra, Pine Island Reserve offers a peaceful getaway perfect for picnicking, swimming, fishing, and kayaking, as well as exploring the Australian wilderness.

The reserve boasts a small plantation of native black cypress pines, Callitris endlicheri, and is located on the Murrumbidgee River, which flows through the district. The river only turns Pine Island into an island during peak flow periods, making it accessible by land at other times.

The reserve has historical significance dating back to 1820 when Charles Throsby first explored the region in search of a suitable water source. He discovered the Murrumbidgee River the next year in April, near Pine Island. Visitors can now enjoy the picturesque scenery and take a walk along the Murrumbidgee Discovery Trail, which runs south to Point Hut crossing and north to Kambah Pools through the stunning Bullen Range Nature Reserve.

Pine Island Reserve is well-suited to those seeking outdoor recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, and kayaking, especially during the warmer months. Visitors can relax in the shade of native trees and cook up a storm on the barbecue grills, which are available for use at the picnic area. The area is also an excellent spot for birdwatching, with several species inhabiting the reserve.

Visitors to Pine Island Reserve will find a range of facilities, including potable water, and clean and accessible public toilets. It is important to note that dogs are not allowed at the reserve.

Take some time out in nature and explore the hidden gem that is Pine Island Reserve.
