Description
Pohaturoa Rock is a volcanic crag or "plug" of rhyolite that rises 245 meters above the Waikato River near Atiamuri, located in Whakatane, New Zealand.
It is an important landmark to all members of the Whakatane community and adds to the unique character of the area. Pohaturoa is a significant site in the tribal narratives of both the Arawa and Ngati Awa people.
Every year on June 16th, Ngati Awa gathers for a dawn ceremony to celebrate the signing of the Bay of Plenty Sheet by the Treaty of Waitangi at Pohaturoa rock in Whakatane. The rock is located behind the Centre, which is centrally located in Canning Place. Currently, Pohaturoa is the only heritage item scheduled in the district plan as a heritage item in Whakatane.
Visitors can view the rock from the roadside and a built-up rock wall for the lawn and gardens in front of the rock. The rock is situated in the center with.
