Point Danger Gannet Colony

Located on the coast of south-western Victoria, Australia, Point Danger is a headland lying at the western end of Portland Bay, on the northern side of Bass Strait. The colony is situated approximately 6 km south-south-east from the city of Portland, while Cape Nelson lies 2.5 km to the south-west and Lawrence Rocks 2 km to the south-east.

Established in October 1996, Point Danger Gannet colony is a well-known natural bird reserve, hosting a colony of Australasian gannets. With around 3000 birds, the Point Danger is Australia's only mainland gannet colony, and all other colonies are situated on islands. The colony was established due to spillover from Lawrence Rocks colony exceeding its capacity. To overcome this issue, the authorities limited the public access to a viewing site overlooking the colony, and two Maremma Sheepdogs were introduced as predators' deterrents. These measures have proven to be priceless in enhancing the gannet colony's growth and protection over the years.

Visitors can enjoy the spectacular view of the gannets and their nesting habitats from the designated viewing platform without disturbing them. The gannet colony is active and dynamic all year round, with the birds feeding and nesting throughout the year. The reserve provides an opportunity to see how the birds interact with their young ones and carry out their daily activities.
