Description
Located on the banks of the Mighty Murray River, the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is a premier regional tourist destination in Echuca.
It offers visitors an opportunity to walk the path of Echuca's river pioneers through interactive displays and exhibits. Visitors can explore the legend of Australia's pioneering spirit and learn how the inland river system connected a fledgling colony to its growing cities and the outside world.
At the Port of Echuca, visitors can discover the unique paddle steamer history of Echuca Moama by exploring the living vessels. Free entry provides access to interactive displays, a sawmill display, working steam exhibits, the nationally heritage-listed Echuca Wharf, static paddle steamers, and barges moored at the Wharf and along the riverbank. There is also a Cargo Shed Kids Space, historic children's games, and the Port of Echuca Railway Station with its resident A2 steam locomotive.
Daily guided tours are available throughout the port area, conducted by local history experts. These tours provide an entertaining and informative experience, setting the scene and sharing stories of Echuca's bustling river trade.
For a unique experience, visitors can take the Port After Dark Guided Lantern Tour, available on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. This tour allows visitors to explore the port and discover its dark secrets of the past.
The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre is open year-round from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except for Christmas Day. To reach the center, visitors can take a train to Echuca Station, located approximately 500 meters from the port. Alternatively, they can drive and park in the free public car park at the port.
