Prospect Hill

Prospect Hill is a significant heritage hill located in Pemulwuy and Prospect within the western regions of Sydney, Australia.

The site is known for its historical significance, geologic features, and panoramic views across the Cumberland Plain. It is situated 30 kilometers (19 miles) from central Sydney and dominates the landscape of the local and regional area.

The indigenous people of the area named the site “Mar-rong” and recognized it as a landmark, meeting place, and boundary. The site has attracted people for over 30,000 years. Since the first settlement in 1791, the site has been a focus of significant antagonism between the indigenous people and European settlers. The area was one of the first places where liberated convicts were granted land to farm. The hill has been used for various purposes throughout history, including industrial buildings, agricultural farms, quarries, rural housing, research facilities, and pastoral properties.

The hill lies centrally in the Cumberland Plain and is Sydney's largest body of igneous rock, rising to a height of 117 meters above sea level. It is located between the south-west corner of CSIRO Division of Animal Production site and the south-east corner of the Boral Resources (NSW) site at Greystanes. Prospect Hill is a “nodal point” of the Cumberland Plain. A unique feature of the hill is that it is Sydney's largest body of igneous rock with an oval shape. The southern slopes drain into Prospect Creek, while the northern slopes drain into Girraween Creek and eventually into the Parramatta River and Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour). The hill is surrounded by several significant water bodies such as Prospect Reservoir and Eastern Creek.
