The Republic of Whangamomona is a self-declared republic located in the rugged North Island of New Zealand. This small settlement, buried in the hills of eastern Taranaki, declared itself a republic in 1989 and has since attained a sort of cult status. Access to Whangamomona is via the Forgotten World Highway, which is a scenic route that winds through the rugged hills of Taranaki. Visitors to the Republic of Whangamomona can purchase a passport, which is stamped upon entry and exit. This is the only place in New Zealand where Kiwis can still use their passport to enter a "foreign" country. The passport is a fun souvenir and a great conversation starter.
