Description
Roma Street Parkland is an 11-hectare park located in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
It is adjacent to the Brisbane Transit Centre and Roma Street railway station. Pedestrian access is available from various points, including the railway station and Albert Street. There is also a car park accessible from Wickham Terrace, College Road, and Gregory Terrace.
The history of Roma Street Parkland dates back thousands of years when it was used by the local Indigenous community for meetings and ceremonies. In 1825, it became part of the original Brisbane settlement. Over the years, the area underwent redevelopment, including the excavation of the steep terrain in 1920. During World War II, the railway terminal played a crucial role in transporting war materials. Eventually, the terminal was relocated in 1991 due to limitations of the site.
Construction of the parkland began in 2000 and it was opened to the public in 2001. Before its opening, it received an award for its innovative concrete finishes. The parkland is known for being the world's largest subtropical garden in a city centre. It features themed gardens, pathways, boardwalks, waterways, and artworks by local artists.
The parkland includes an open-air amphitheatre that has been a feature of the area for several decades. It has hosted performances by theatre groups and orchestral concerts, including plays by William Shakespeare. The parkland also offers an outdoor cinema experience operated by Moonlight Cinema during the summer months.
Roma Street Parkland is a popular destination in Brisbane, offering a range of activities and a unique blend of nature and culture.
