Sandfly Bay

Sandfly Bay is a stunning sandy bay located on the southern side of Otago Peninsula, 15 kilometers east of central Dunedin, New Zealand.

The bay is a Department of Conservation wildlife reserve that is frequented by trampers and is best known as a tramping site. The main track descends from the Seal Point Road car park across farmland and down, via a series of viewing platforms and the sandy slope to the beach near the mouth of Morris Creek. The circuit continues around the coastline and provides access to Sandymount summit and a marked route to Sandfly Bay.

Sandfly Bay is one of the iconic beaches on the Otago Peninsula and is home to a variety of New Zealand natives, including yellow-eyed penguins, sea lions, and fur seals. The beach is surrounded by large dunes that provide a stunning backdrop to the bay. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife while walking along the beach or exploring the dunes. Sandymount Recreation Reserve, which is adjacent to Sandfly Bay, has some incredible views of Hoopers Inlet and provides a good look at the southern end of the Otago Peninsula. Visitors can enjoy the stunning views while hiking the Sandymount Track, which provides access to Sandfly Bay and Sandymount summit.

Sandfly Bay is a distinctive landmark that can be clearly seen in good weather from Second Beach, close to Saint Clair, 18 kilometers to the west. The bay is accessible from Seal Point Road or a walking track from Sandymount. The Sandymount to Sandfly Bay Track is home to nesting Yellow Eyed Penguins/Hoiho, so if you spot a penguin, crouch down and try to remain hidden.
