Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Turangi Suburb

Description

Soda Springs is a hidden gem located in the rural countryside near Rotorua, New Zealand.

It is set between Lakes Rotoma and Rotoehu in the Bay of Plenty, making it a perfect spot for those who love to gaze at the night sky. The minimal light pollution in the area provides a fantastic environment for stargazing. The springs are open seven days a week, so visitors have plenty of opportunities to take advantage of the healing waters.

The land itself has 1200 beneficiaries but is managed by the Waitangi No.3 Trust on their behalf. Historically, the springs are very important to the local tribes Ngati Tamateatutahi Kawiti, Ngati Te Rangiunuora and Ngati Pikiao Whanui. Two springs, Ngarongoiri and Reihana, combine with the cool stream water from Waiwhero to create a cozy place to soak.

To get to Soda Springs from Tauranga, visitors can take State Hwy 2/Pacific Coast Hwy towards Mt. Maunganui. Follow State Hwy 2 for 24 miles (38 km) before turning right on Pongakawa Station Road. Continue on and merge left onto Old Coach Road. At the second fork, stay to the right and continue on until reaching the destination.

Soda Springs is a great stop for those who are planning to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The hike is often described as New Zealand's greatest day walk and is a challenging journey across a remarkable volcanic landscape. The trail begins at Mangatepopo Valley and continues over Central Crater to the old volcanic vent of Blue Lake, before it rounds the Red Crater and descends to the Emerald Lakes. The hike is approximately 19.4 km long and takes around 7-9 hours to complete. After a long day of hiking, visitors can relax and soak in the healing waters of Soda Springs.
